  18. <p>     It was hardly a typical Monte Carlo menu: alligator sausages
  19. from Louisiana, soft-shelled crabs from Maryland, fresh New
  20. Jersey corn. These were among the specialties brought by 60
  21. international chefs and restaurateurs who then turned them into
  22. culinary tributes to food critic Craig Claiborne at an elegant
  23. garden party celebrating his 70th birthday last week. "It was
  24. without question the greatest day of my life," he says.
  25. Earlier, as the chefs frolicked in the water of a decorative
  26. pool, the birthday boy was impulsively given a piggyback ride.
  27. He avoided being splashed, only to be properly anointed with
  28. a burst of champagne.
